Philips is not just about making great televisions; Philips is about changing lives. This is what Philips Corporate Communications wants to express through an online interactive magazine.

In addition to newsletters sent out by e-mail, Philips aims at providing a more involving experience to its visitors by communicating corporate themes and stories online.

When Philips asked TriMM to develop a concept for this magazine, they gave a few benchmark examples that we could use as a starting point. Based on those, our first idea was to create a concept using existing Philips templates and components. This would have been the safest and most logical approach.

We did a few mock-ups until one of our designers remarked: “Philips doesn’t need us to shuffle around the standard templates, they asked us to create a concept that sets it apart from the rest.”

The inspiration came from pop-up books for children, such as One Red Dot, that fold out fun and exciting 3D objects on each page.

Inspirational book One Red Dot

Each theme would be presented as a book, with relevant stories appearing when the book is opened. The team was instantly excited, but the main question was: is Philips willing to go this direction? After all, this is totally different from existing newsmagazines and anything we’ve seen at Philips.

Luckily, they too were excited about the concept. What followed was challenge for both Philips and TriMM. We needed to balance usability and presentation while maintaining a Philips look and feel. We used the Papervision 3D flash engine to make the concept come to life.

We surely are proud of the results. The initial feedback is very positive. There are still a lot of ideas and possibilities to take this platform to the next level. We can’t wait to start working on the next iteration!

“TriMM has been an invaluable partner, with great creative capacity, in developing and designing Philips Insights – an innovative concept for communicating corporate themes and stories online.”
